Why UPS trucks aren't supposed to make left turns

If you watch UPS drivers in town, you will sometimes notice the trucks make left turns. However, it is very uncommon. They generally attempt to make as many right turns as possible to get to the same destination, even if that means it takes them longer.

This is a curious decision from a company that makes its money with fast shipping. Why wouldn't they want the most direct route? Why would they tell drivers that they usually need to go all the way around the block, rather than turning left?

There are two main reasons. First off, it's financial. UPS trucks that have to sit waiting for a left turn are wasting fuel and wasting time. The company actually makes more money by sending trucks around the block -- where they may make other deliveries on the way -- so that they get rid of these wait times.

Secondly, far more accidents happen during left turns. They're one of the most dangerous things any driver can do. If the turn is not at a light, it's all about perception. The driver has to decide when it's safe to turn and then cross in front of other traffic. Even a minor mistake, like misjudging another car's speed, can lead to a wreck. These accidents don't happen with right turns.

Unfortunately, with the high amount of commercial vehicles on the road, accidents do still occur. Even wise safety measures like this can't prevent all of them. If you get injured in one of these accidents, make sure you know what legal steps you can take.
