It’s no secret that many young drivers drive too fast. It is not uncommon for them to travel in groups, and the consequences of negligent driving often include severe injuries to passengers. A recent serious car accident in Pennsylvania resulted in the hospitalization of four young people.
A preliminary report by police indicates that a 20-year-old driver was eastbound on Route 23 in Lancaster County, driving at an extremely high rate of speed. As he went into a left curve, he apparently lost control of the car and careened off the roadway on the right side. He overcorrected, causing the car to cross the roadway again and smash through a fence. After striking a tree, the vehicle came to a halt, hundreds of feet away from the initial point of impact.
The driver suffered minor injuries, but an 18-year-old passenger was ejected from the vehicle and was airlifted to a hospital. Two other passengers, ages 21 and 18, were trapped in the car and had to be extricated by rescue workers. They also suffered serious injuries and both were hospitalized. Authorities said charges may be filed later.
The injured victims of this serious car accident may pursue claims for financial relief to assist in covering the high medical costs they will likely be facing. Accident injuries often render victims unable to return to work for extended periods, and the loss of income may cause financial problems. By submitting evidence of negligence on the part of the driver to a civil court in Pennsylvania, victims may be entitled to the entry of a monetary judgment for damages sustained. All documented financial losses will be considered by the court once liability has been established by appropriate proof.
