Botched birth control surgery leads to medical malpractice claim

It is only natural to expect improved health after receiving medical treatment. However, a significant number of people nationwide, including in Pennsylvania, find they have more medical problems after treatment than what they had before. A married couple in another state recently filed a medical malpractice lawsuit alleging negligence. Defendants named in the lawsuit include a hospital and a doctor.

According to court documents, the plaintiffs accuse the defendants of providing negligent medical care. The complaint states that the doctor performed a scheduled bilateral tubal ligation on the wife in 2009. However, complications arose, and the patient needed emergency surgery when her small bowel contents leaked into her peritoneum.

The plaintiffs allege the doctor left the repair of the perforated bowel to incompetent nursing staff. The suit alleges the hospital's negligence in providing support staff that was unable to repair the resection. Along with recovery of the high medical expenses brought about by the additional surgery, the husband claims loss of consortium. The plaintiffs seek over $50,000 from each defendant, and they requested a trial by jury.

Medical malpractice lawsuits are typically complicated to navigate. For this reason, many victims of medical negligence in Pennsylvania choose to utilize the experience of a skilled medical malpractice attorney. With the support and guidance of a seasoned lawyer, the necessary evidence to prove negligence may be obtained. The successful presentation of such a claim in a civil court may lead to recovery of past and future medical expenses along with compensation for emotional and physical damages caused by the negligence of medical professionals.
