Motorcycle accidents: Rider injured by alleged drunk driver

Too many Pennsylvania residents fall victim to drunk drivers. Motorcycle accidents that are caused by intoxicated vehicle drivers often leave riders severely injured. This was the case in a recent incident in which an alleged drunk driver struck a motorcycle.

According to an accident report, the incident occurred in Doylestown Township on a recent Tuesday afternoon. Reportedly, a 60-year-old woman was southbound on a local roadway -- traveling in the left lane -- when another southbound vehicle smashed into the motorcycle from behind. This vehicle was a pickup truck that was operated by a 38-year-old man from a neighboring state.

Emergency crews were called to the accident scene. Upon arrival, responders had to remove the woman who was trapped underneath the pickup truck. Although no details were reported about the injuries the woman suffered, it was announced that she was in a serious condition. Officers said that probable cause existed that indicated the man was impaired. He was arrested, and after gaining his consent, blood was drawn for toxicology tests for which the results are pending.

Injured victims of motorcycle accidents are entitled to pursue recovery of damages. Personal injury claims may be filed in a Pennsylvania civil court. The plaintiff will have to prove negligence by another person who caused or contributed to the accident that caused the injuries. Once the court can determine financial liability, it will adjudicate documented claims to cover financial losses, such as medical expenses and lost income, along with emotional damages sustained, such as pain and suffering. This process is typically followed by the entering of a monetary judgment.
